“If post modernism was LSD then C.R. Avery would be a field of magic mushrooms" -Terminal City, Vancouver Press 2001

http://www.cravery.com/

C.R. Avery is a one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast: musical guest (Be Good Tanyas, Po Girl); group member (Tons Of Fun University), songwriter (Jolie Holland); playwright, and poet (the international slam poetry circuit). Tom Waits is a fan and brought C.R. up to perform on stage with him in Germany. If Lawrence Ferlinghetti could play harmonica like Little Walter, you’d have an idea of what a groundbreaking piece of work this is and the genre busting audio statement that defines Magic Hour Sailor Songs.

C.R. Avery is a musicians’ musician. He is admired by and has performed with Tom Waits, Ani DiFranco, Utah Phillips, Sage Francis and others. This is his new solo album and we’re proud to bring him to a wider audience. Whether playing in front of thousands on the folk festivel circut or in a small cafe in Berlin or Edinburgh, C.R. Avery is a unique and electrifying performer. He simultaneously beatboxes, sings, plays harmonica and a Herbie Hancock 80s style red rocket keytar. Having drawn from a well of influences, C.R. is to hip-hop what Jimmy Reed was to Chicago blues; a one man traveling troubadour - but he is one for these modern times.

C.R.’s lyrical skills and vocal delivery have brought him to the forefront of the international spoken word scene. He is a past winner of the CBC national Poetry Face-Off. Scratchy, smoky, beaten by years of cigarettes and off-mike shouting in cabarets all over the world, C.R. Avery’s voice is instantly identifiable. C.R’s lyrics come from his slam poetry pieces, honed by the merciless, sudden death, one-victor-and-allothers-cast-aside competitive nature of the slam world. As such, having been performed in front of an audience that demands both intellectual clarity and visceral honesty, competing against the very best work of the very best poets, his pieces are crafted to a necessary
perfection.

Magic Hour Sailor Songs is an elegiac poetic tour de force, bending and criss-crossing genres; there’s a string quartet, an all female jazz choir and the best out there jazz & classical musicans - creating something rarely seen these days; a genuinely powerful artistic work.

Edmonton Singer Songwriters ALEXIA MELNYCHUK & LARA YULE SINGH KICK OFF their EASTERN CANADIAN TOUR on July 20th. The girls will be promoting their music to new listeners between Lethbridge Alberta and Halifax Nova Scotia.

When Lara Yule Singh received an invitation to perform at Fred Eaglesmith’s Southern Ontario Picnic in Aylmer, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to hit the road! Having just returned from a delightful tour of Western Canada with singer songwriter Alexia Melnychuk, the girls pack it up again and head East.

Accompanying each other on stage with an assortment of instruments, guitars, banjo, keyboard, melodica, and xylophone, these songbirds will delight you with their FRESH FOLK-POP, FOLK-COUNTRY SOUNDS, beautiful
voices, and very entertaining banter.
___________________________________________________________

"LARA YULE SINGH could be the answer to all our problems. Her folk-pop debut, Something In the Still will instantly put a smile on your face and lower your blood pressure…a delightfully quirky recording on par with efforts by Calgary's Chad VanGaalen and freak-folk star Devendra Banhart." –SANDRA SPEROUNES, THE EDMONTON JOURNAL

“ALEXIA MELNYCHUK has something very much in common with some of Canada’s most influential and inspiring singer songwriters but what tends to set her apart…are her beautifully mastered vocals and expertly crafted lyrics…" “...the girl touches and provokes things in our hearts and souls that we thought were locked away for good!” COLIN LYNCH, IOM MAGAZINE/RCAT COMMUNICATIONS

Lara Yule Singh
At A Glance ...

With her second release slated for the summer of 2007, a personal invite to play at Fred Eaglesmith's Southern Ontario picnic, and record labels starting to call, Lara Yule Singh's star is beginning to sparkle.

Lara's sincere, profound music is subtly unconventional. Her meaningful lyrics and quirky style are delicate, refreshing, avante-folk poetry.

Her debut CD, Something In the Still was released in May 2006. It spent ten weeks in the top 30 on the CKUA Radio charts (http://www.ckua.com), peaking at #3, just under Paul Simon and T-Bone Burnett. Something In the Still has frequented top 20 charts across Canada and is now being played internationally.

In between shooting the video for "Amazing Grace Revisited" and pre-production for a second album, Lara was a featured artist on Shaw TV (local), City TV (Alberta-wide), and Help TV (national). She's opened for Gaye Delorme and shared stages with many other talented musicians across Western Canada. She's played numerous festivals, including Homefest, North Country Solstice Festival, Sasquatch Festival, and Fred Eaglesmith's Alberta Festival.

_________________________________________________________________
About CRAIG CARDIFF
www.craigcardiff.com

Craig Cardiff - singersongwriter, troubadour, builds landscapes of sound
using live digital loops - brings the room to a hush. edged, folk,
beautiful, melancholy and left leaning, one song breaks your heart and the
next one puts it back together.

Hailing from Wakefield, Quebec, Craig Cardiff is a national treasure - his
strong songs, beat-up acoustic guitar, honeyed-voice, road poetry, story
collections, engaging stage presence, and live loopings all confirm it.

Craig Cardiff is challenging typical music industry approach and providing
an alternative for the TV generation. He asks that his audience invite him
into their living rooms; literally. A pioneer in alternate venue touring in
churches, basements, festivals, kitchens and the street, Cardiff brings the
philosophy to life with his most recent album, entitled Bombshelter Living
Room. Reflective of the audience / performer intimacy that Cardiff supports
through his storytelling and songwriting, Cardiff, encourages an interactive
environment with the audience to endorse the true nature of "folk" in his
music.

The album is a formidable collection of canadiana; touching on conflicting
political landscapes and the insular yet beautiful worlds of the very people
who listen and support Cardiff's music. "Making music is a collaborative
experience between the performer and the listener," says Cardiff.

Craig welcomes the opportunity to present his music in a variety of venues
such as churches, theatres, cafes and festival stages, however he advocates
that a living room show provides a more intimate experience. "Disco shanked
the singersongwriter in the 70's, and the 80's forced it into hibernation.
The past 10 years have seen singer the song writer genre come into its own.
Bypassing the music machine and connecting directly with audiences."

Cardiff exposes the human condition, beautifying the clumsier and less proud
moments. With sardonic sincerity and polished awkwardness, Cardiff's
performances are a mix of story and song, and occasional brawls. "I think
that the best shows are the ones where the lights are low, the music weaves
in and out and the people forget where the audience begins and the performer
ends," says Cardiff.

Cardiff's commitment to his music is mirrored in his approach to touring and
recording during the past eight years. Live recordings, self-produced albums
that range in sound experimentation and collaborations comprise his aight
albums, available as part of the MapleMusic/Universal Records Catalogue.

Craig has played with and opened for some of the best artists that Canada
has to offer including Andy Stochansky, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Blue
Rodeo, Danny Michel, Gordon Downie (Tragically Hip), Hawksley Workman, Sarah
Slean, Skydiggers, 54-40 and more. Catch Craig out on the road this fall
2006 in the US, and winter/spring 2007 in Canada.

About JACOB AND LILY
www.myspace.com/jacobandlily
www.jacobandlily.com

Two is always better than one. Jacob and Lily, Canada’s newest roots/pop/folk duo, is quickly turning heads and garnering rave reviews as they cross the country in a motor home, they call home, packed to the rafters with unique percussion pieces and guitar gear.    Karla Adolphe, with her soaring vocals layered over moving melodies and insightful lyrics, and Caleb Friesen, as he lays down complex and compelling fusion-style rhythms, create an intense atmosphere that captivates their audiences.  With their unique and organic sound, Jacob and Lily are the freshest act to emerge from Winnipeg’s rich musical community. After eight months of touring together in support of Karla Adolphe’s debut album Come Home, Caleb Friesen and Karla Adolphe decided to merge their musical careers, and thus Jacob and Lily was born.  Incorporating the Cajon beat box, world percussion instruments and a partial drum kit, Caleb is the perfect compliment to Karla’s driving style and compelling voice, which critics have compared to Martha Wainright, Ani DiFranco and Sarah McLaughlin.  Having reached their goal of 1000 album sales and 100 shows in 10 months, Karla and Caleb have taken the country by storm. Karla and Caleb have enjoyed sharing the stage with Craig Cardiff, Matt York, Ari Neufeld, Rik Leaf, Jaylene Johnson, MB Hal, and the Doug and Jess Band.  Other performing highlights include the Winnipeg Folk Festival Lunchour Series, MARIA Manitoba Music Showcase at OCFF, Harvest Moon Festival, SNACC Music in the Ruins Series, Winnipeg Folk Festival Young Performers’ Showcase, the Winnipeg Folk Exchange Grand Opening, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, In Studio broadcast with Jonathan Love on California 103 in Calgary, the 2005 Fallout Artfest in Minneapolis, and the 2002 David Suzuki Elements Tour, which featured Bruce Cockburn.  Jacob and Lily's songs have also been selected for the Manitoba Roots Compilation and the Cafe 100.7 promotional compilation.Caleb and Karla have also enjoyed playing a variety of venues across Canada, including the University of Alberta’s Powerplant, the Lucky Bar in Victoria, the Karma Club in Calgary, and McNally’s in Regina. They have been featured and receive radio play on many college and mainstream radio stations, including Cafe 100.7, CKUW and KICK in Winnipeg, CJSR in Edmonton and California 103 in Calgary, as well as television programs like 807 Backbeat in Kenora and SHAW TV in Winnipeg. Viewing art as a vehicle for conversation, relationship and community, Karla and Caleb are dedicated to causes that address important social issues, particularly those focused on children and justice. They are currently supporting causes such as: Invisible Children, an organization that promotes awareness of child abductions in Uganda, and Hero Holiday, an organization supporting community development in the Dominican Republic. The duo is thrilled to announce the release of their debut album, The Cathedral, which was recorded on location in various Winnipeg venues, hand picked to capture Jacob and Lily's organic sound. Jacob and Lily - making you part of something alive!

LEIF NORMAN enjoys performing poetry and music under such names as “DJ Particle Board” and “Mr. Shmengie the Bouncing Toupee.” His work has gained him a place on the 2007 Manitoba Poetry Slam Team which will compete in Halifax in October. As a recent graduate of the University of Winnipeg he hopes to put his Chemistry degree to good use and get a real job like a grown up person should, but until then he is concentrating on poetry. Norman lives in Winnipeg.
After Words (Sept 28)

SKIP STONE is a Winnipeg born writer who lives his civilian life under the alias Jonathan Surla. He is a member of Winnipeg B-boy crew Dangerous Goods under many aliases, and tried to be an actor in Toronto for what he feels may have been waaaaaay too long. He was a member of last year’s Winnipeg Poetry Slam Team which competed in Toronto and is happy to be joining the team once again to compete in Halifax this year. He raps, wears hats, and in his spare time he likes to write short bios for his various other aliases.

After exploring piano, guitar and bass guitar, DJ CODA migrated into DJing underground electronic music. He was involved in the UK Garage movement, and has recently become a major force in brining the new Dubstep sound to North America. He and production partner Deep Six have formed the Phantohm Sound System, and use organically-infused rhythms and sub-bass music to produce sonic soundscapes of Dub-propelled apocalyptic overtones with dangerous hints of melody. Mic controlled Pucona brings his lyrical wisdom to the production. Coda can be heard Friday nights on Bass Behavior Radio (101.5 UMFM) or at www.myspace.com/phantohms.
After Words (Sept 29)

GREG HANEC has been involved with film and video in Winnipeg for more than two decades. In the 1980s, he made three short films and two feature-length films, one of which, Downtime ’84, was accepted into the Berlin Film Festival. Since then, he has done seven experimental films and is completing his next feature, Think at Night. He collaborated with Campbell Martin on a series of guerilla projections of film loops on trains, billboards, and buildings. His loops and videos have also been a part of numerous raves, and performances of such bands as The Absent Sound, Vav Jungle, National Monument, and his own musical projects, Suture and Philia.

"This is the sort of sound you'd want to hear pouring out of roadhouses as you drive up expecting to get drunk and maybe fall in love." (Americana UK Magazine)

Romi Mayes' sound is also the sort that folks just can't get seem to get enough of. Quoted as being one of the hardest working independent musicians in Canada, in the past two years alone, she has toured well over 400 dates to acclaimed festivals, packed theatres, dance halls, bars, pubs, cafes, and living rooms across North America. Her last two Americana/roots enriched albums "Living Room Sessions" (2005) and latest "Sweet Somethin' Steady" (Gurf Morlix, 2006) have been nominated for various prestigious music awards. Both of Mayes' albums have charted on radio stations worldwide landing on a plethora of "Best of" top year picks.

Mayes has no plans of slowing down. With her award winning "Sweet Somethin Steady" attracting mass international media attention and her fan base rapidly increasing, Mayes is earning her place at the heavyweight songwriter's table with the likes of Mary Gauthier, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch.

Raised in the concentrated and extraordinarily talented music community of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Mayes' writing and performing has been nurtured since she was a young teen. "When I was 15 I got up on stage and played a couple of tunes. The room was silent. They cheered for what seemed like hours when I was done. I went home and knew that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."

Now, at age 32, Romi Mayes has shared the stage with the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Billy Joe Shaver, Iris Dement, Gurf Morlix, Joe Ely, JImmy Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Bo Ramsey, Pieta Brown, Hayes Carll, Jim Cuddy, Lynn Miles, Barney Bentall, Corb Lund, Martha Wainwright, Fred Eaglesmith, Ray Condo, Camper Van Beethoven, and many more.

With her unique mix of bourbon infused country, blues, and bluegrass, Romi Mayes' engaging live show will make you miss your mouth when sippin' your beer. Her sexy, sincere vocals have made grown men cry, her solid bad-ass guitar playing has had folks up out of their chairs, and her honest, edgy songwriting is putting her on route to becoming the Joan Jett of country.

About Maxim and Cosmo

Maxim and Cosmo

TJ’s newest monologue

90 minutes

About sex

There’s very little physical action in the show.

None, in fact.

But there is an elaborate web of 16 000-some words, woven into the space
over the stage

By a very opinionated, fast-talking guy

Sort of sit-down stand-up comedy

With stories

Examining gender roles, stereotypes, prejudices in our culture, in our
language

Daring to possibly answer the question of what women really want

And men too

There’s  an extensive use of language that some people might consider
foul. It isn’t gratuitous.

Maxim & Cosmo first fell upon human ears in a series of workshop readings
as part of The TJ Dawe Box Set on the 2005 fringe circuit. The response
was rather good. In fact it was the best attended show in the box set. And
got the most laughs. And applause. The script has incorporated some of the
reactiosn that came along with those readings in Orlando, Montreal,
Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Victoria and Vancouver. And ignored others. It’s
now memorized, polished, and ready to tour. The title refers to the two
magazines.

Süss is a singer/songwriter, arranger, storyteller, producer of cabaret events, and hilarious live performer (keyboards, piano, guitar, flute). She rides the piano gently and surely, sometimes raucausly and hard. Süss sounds like Ricky Lee Jones and Joni Mitchell had a little BarBeQue party with Laurie Anderson. Her arrangements are "ingenious" and she leaves the necessary space in the music for you to process her caustic wit. You can hear the smile in her voice. Süss is currently working on her first record with multi-juno-award-winning producer Dan Donahue. Süss's sweet voice accommodates storytelling, hymns of the reformation, jazz, and folk balladry with an edge. Prepare yourself for murder ballads, standards, strange time signatures (as always) and some beatboxing by Daniel Roy!

Singled out in the introduction of The New Canon as a 'young firebrand' (which he reads as 'troublemaker') working against what people hold dear to the Canadian poetic tradition, Jay is one of Canada's voices of authority and risk on innovative, experimental, contemporary poetry.

Ta ta ta ta - this Friday @ the CYRK*** - come hear the bestestestest of the best Winnipeg performance poets in action. For desert, it's Fernando Raguero who has flown in just to do it for you - your visit to Tim Horton’s won't be the same after you hear Fernando. [Premise #1: Vancouver Poetry Slam has had an incredible draw and support throughout the season, with the final night drawing almost 300 people (Fernando qualified for the team by the way). Premise #2: A few of our own incredible Winnipeg performance poets have ranked as high as Vancouver poets in the past national competitions. Conclusion: Winnipeg’s final night is bound to be a world-class performance poetry event. Recommendations: Don't miss the opportunity to be a part of it, even if my syllogism is imperfect.]

And on Saturday, to wrap up the busy couple of weeks @ the CYRK, it's Jay MillAr from Toronto, who I was told is a very interesting guy. More info below.

FERNANDO RAGUERO & WINNIPEG POETRY SLAM FINAL – MAY 25
Friday, May 25 @ 9:00 pm @ The CYRK (254 Young Street)

Eight season’s best poets compete to qualify for the Winnipeg Slam Poetry Team, to be a part of one of World’s most dynamic spoken word festivals, the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (this year held in October in Halifax).

Here is a great recent article about spoken word in Canada, written by my friend from toronto for Broken Pencil - http://www.brokenpencil.com/features/feature.php?featureid=98

Fernando Raguero - one of four poets on the world renounoned Vancouver Slam Poetry Team* (2007 Edition) - is Vancouver’s most loved poet, whose unique, strait-up, uncompromising, and humorous look at the world brings revelation, laughter, and weird thoughts.

*Vancouver Slam Poetry Team has won the team competition at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word every year since the festival's conception in 2003.

The FUGITIVES - in their first ever Winnipeg appearance

Details @ www.fugetives.ca

Vancouverites Barbara Adler, Mark Berube, and Brendan McLeod are singer-songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and award winning performance poets who have merged their diverse styles into one distinct mixture of poetry and song, backed by accordion, guitar, piano, banjo, and melodica. A group of road dogs, they have toured their unique combination of three part harmony, athletic performance poetry, and skillful musicianship, four times through Europe and twice through Canada since the group's inception two years ago.

Their recent performances include the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (Vancouver, BC), the German National SLAM championship (Leipzig, Germany), Festival Voix D'Ameriques (Montreal, Quebec), the Dylan Thomas Festival (Swansea, Wales), the London High Commission (London, England), and the Isle of Barra Poetry and Song Festival (Scotland).

They have two new albums due this year. One, a music/spoken word album engineered by John Raham and featuring members of the Be Good Tanyas, Po' Girl, TOFU, and the Breakmen. Their second album is a full length spoken word piece funded by the Canadian Council of the Arts, Storytelling Project.

"The Fugitives are one of the most innovative, exciting, and accomplished groups of musicians and poets I have ever seen…the best show in fifteen years of the festival" - Off the Shelf Festival, Sheffield (UK)

"One of the best events we've ever had…right up there with Allen Ginsberg and Ken Kesey" - David Wooley, Executive Director, Dylan Thomas Festival, Swansea (UK)

"I can see why they're jumping off the tables for you!" Sheryl McKay, North by Northwest CBC.

"With superior instrumentation and creative lyrics, they are a band that demands your attention and leaves you begging for more" - Meredith Hambrock, Ubyssey, Vancouver

"Welcome to the land where lyrics and instruments are equals…you will absolutely love this band" - Satellite, Vancouver

"Poetry doesn't get much further from the library shelf than this" - Georgia Straight, Vancouver

"An experience certain to please both literary and musical audiences" - Vienna Literature Festival, Austria

"They are a show you absolutely cannot afford to miss!" - Drek Daa, Founder & Chair, Spoken Word Canada

"The Fugitives are a Sasquatch Marching band walking high wire across the Grand Canyon. At first glance, you expect it to all come crashing down, but upon closer inspection you notice they're flying, and scrutinizing even further, you realize you're floating too." - Randy Jacobs, Artistic Director, 2005 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word
